Lighting design for award winning restaurant isn’t an opportunity that comes along every day, so at Fritz Fryer we were delighted to be involved in the expansion of the fabulous The Bookshop in Hereford, which is highly acclaimed for its Sunday roasts and a reputation for using quality, locally sourced ingredients, has put Hereford on the food map.
Their loyal foodie followers have enabled rapid growth in just six years. Advocates in reducing their impact on the planet, and their genuine, considered approach to supporting quality local suppliers (even having a dedicated butchery department on site), they have eliminated single-use plastics and use renewable energy sources instead. All of which reinforce their passion for modern, ethical eating.
Supporting local businesses
When they planned their interior fit-out for the newly renovated restaurant, they stuck to their philosophy of using local and through (I’m name-dropping) a mutual friend and fab print designer, Sunny Todd approached us to provide the lighting scheme. The brief was to achieve a clean Industrial look and provide the ‘wow’ factor, big on impact as well as ambient – Rule of Tum Ltd Director Dorian, loves the smoked glass in the Fritz Fryer collection, so we just had to include this in his restaurant scheme.
Choosing lighting for the restaurant
The lighting design had to gel with the Industrial styled interior of exposed brickwork and heavy wooden benches and this provided an excellent backdrop for the collection of contemporary Fritz Fryer pendant and industrial wall lights.
In the large welcoming restaurant window hang our edgy Skinny Ribbed Upton Pendant lights with Antique Brass and Elephant grey flex.
Complementing the amazing 13-way clear glass Hereford Cluster with Bronze and Celtic gold flex, hang the white Hereford Globe Pendant lights.
Mixing up the types of glass has achieved a strong, textural look within the lighting scheme without losing coherence.
Above their banquette seating area hang the Skinny Ribbed Wye Valley Pendant lights, these are a perfect fit for cafes and restaurants – allowing plenty of directional light downwards and very classy to look at.
The light bulbs specified come from the award-winning ethical company well-Lit.co.uk, with different shapes and sizes that are well-matched to suit our Fritz Fryer collection.
Lighting up the vast bookcase sits the Industrial WorkshopLamps and the vintage style Art Deco Spotlights.
Adding even more interest within this exciting space hang our fully customisable Grafton Globe Lanterns in Smoked Glass with a retro Black and White dogtooth Overbraid.
A successful commercial lighting project
We are always thrilled when approached to work on commercial projects and presented with such freedom, The Bookshop provided us with a great opportunity to showcase what we do so well – hand-blown, bespoke, contemporary, designer lighting! It is always extra special to work with a local company too, especially when we pride ourselves on sourcing products as locally as possible and we share a similar ethos and love of Herefordshire.
