Table lamps are a practical and stylish solution for both private homes and commercial spaces. They are essential for creating an ambient atmosphere and to warm up a dark corner. Browse our range of modern, vintage and fine quality antique lamps.
A table lamp is the fastest way to change how a room feels: no electrician, no drilling, just warm light at sitting height exactly where you need it. The rooms people love being in almost always have lamps; the rooms that feel flat almost never do.
Our table lamps are made and restored in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982, from contemporary designs like the Alton linear and Ingham Dome, to adjustable reading lamps like the Hay, to one-offs you will not find anywhere else, a pink glass Lucton, a ship’s gimbal lamp, restored ormolu lamps. Every piece is wired and tested to current standards before it leaves the workshop.
The rule of thumb: a lamp’s bottom edge should sit around shoulder height when you are seated beside it, and pairs flanking a sofa, bed or console always beat one. Tell us where the lamp is going and we will help you choose honestly, including when a smaller, simpler lamp does the job.
The best living room table lamp puts warm light at sitting height where you need it: beside the sofa, on a console, in a dark corner. Aim for the shade’s bottom edge around shoulder height when seated, and use pairs flanking a sofa or fireplace for balance. Fritz Fryer makes each of ours to order.
As a rule, the bottom of the shade should sit around shoulder height when you are seated beside it, typically 60 to 75 centimetres overall for a side table. Beside a bed, the same rule applies sitting up. Too tall glares, too short fails to light. Tell us your table height and we will advise.
A reading lamp wants an adjustable arm or a shade that directs light downward onto the page, placed around shoulder height beside your chair or bed. Our Hay adjustable lamp is made for exactly this job. Pair it with a warm, bright-enough LED, around 400 to 800 lumens, dimmable for evenings.
Pairs flanking a sofa, bed or console should match, symmetry is what makes them work. Beyond that, lamps in one room need to speak the same language, shared finish or era, rather than match exactly. Our lamps are made to order in matching finishes, so coordinating is easy.
Warm-white LEDs around 2700K, dimmable wherever possible: around 400 to 800 lumens for most table lamps. Filament-style LEDs suit clear glass bases; opal or frosted bulbs suit shades. All our lamps take standard LED bulbs, and we can recommend the exact bulb for each design.
Yes. Every vintage and one-off lamp we sell is stripped, rewired in line with current standards and safety-tested in our workshop before sale. Untested vintage lamps from markets and dealers should always be professionally rewired before use; ours arrive ready to plug in.
Yes. Most of our table lamps are made to order in our Herefordshire workshop, so finishes can be matched to your scheme and many designs adjusted in size. Our one-off and restored pieces are single items, sold as they are, and we will always tell you which is which.
Our made-to-order table lamps are priced comparably with premium retail brands; restored one-offs are priced individually by rarity and condition. What you are buying is solid materials, handmaking or hand restoration in Herefordshire, and a lamp built to last decades rather than seasons.
