Hay Lighting Collection

The Hay lighting collection is a modern take on the Edwardian coolie design. Hand blown in the UK and available in three sizes, the Hay looks fabulous in white glass over a kitchen island. Or, for an added touch of elegance, try the smoked glass versions.
Using Hay-On-Wye to name one of our collections after, which is actually just across the Herefordshire border, is a bit cheeky. But with its famous literary festival and magnificent countryside, we couldn’t resist.

The Hay collection is built for readers: swing-arm wall lights, adjustable reading lights and table lamps that put light exactly where the page is, then fold away. It is the most functional family we make, and, in solid brass, rather more beautiful than functional lighting usually manages.

The collection is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982: the long swing arm wall light and short swing arm, the adjustable reading light and adjustable table lamp, the swan neck wall light and pendant, with a bathroom swan neck and bathroom pendant rated for wet rooms.

Every piece is made to order, in finishes matched to your scheme. The reading-light rule of thumb: mount a swing arm or reading light at shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed or settled in your chair. Tell us where it is going and we will confirm the position and reach honestly before we make it.

What is the Hay lighting collection?

The Hay collection is a Fritz Fryer family built around adjustable reading light: swing-arm wall lights, reading lights, table lamps, swan necks and pendants, with bathroom-rated versions. Every piece is handmade to order in solid brass in our Herefordshire workshop, designed to put light exactly where you need it.

What is the best wall light for reading in bed?

A swing-arm or adjustable reading light, mounted at shoulder height when sitting up in bed, puts light exactly on the page without taking bedside table space or disturbing a partner. The Hay swing arm and adjustable reading light are made to order for exactly this job, in finishes matched to your room.

How high should a swing arm wall light be mounted?

Mount a swing arm wall light around shoulder height when you are seated or sitting up beside it, typically 1.1 to 1.3 metres from the floor beside a bed or reading chair, so the arm reaches over your shoulder onto the page. Tell us your bed or chair height and we will confirm the position.

What is a swing arm wall light?

A swing arm wall light is mounted on an articulated arm that swings and extends, putting light exactly where you want it, over a page, a desk, a kitchen counter, then folding back flat to the wall. Our Hay swing arms are handmade in solid brass, in long and short reaches, made to order.

Which Hay lights are suitable for bathrooms?

The Hay bathroom swan neck wall light and bathroom pendant are purpose-built and rated for bathroom zones. UK bathrooms have strict zone rules by distance from water, so tell us where in the room each fitting will go and we will confirm exactly what is safe.

Are Hay lights dimmable?

Yes. All Hay fittings take LED bulbs and dim normally with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer, so a reading light can run bright for the crossword and drop soft for winding down. We can recommend bulb and dimmer pairings for each piece.

Are Hay lights made in the UK?

Yes. Every piece in the Hay collection is designed and handmade in our workshop in Herefordshire, as we have done since 1982, in solid hand-spun brass and proper glass, and wired and tested to current standards before dispatch.

How much do Hay lights cost?

Made-to-order Hay pieces are priced comparably with premium retail brands. What you are buying is solid brass rather than plating, an arm and mechanism built for decades of daily adjustment, handmaking in Herefordshire, and a finish matched to your scheme.
