The hallway is the first room you and your guests see, and the last one lit on most lighting plans. That is backwards. A well-lit hall sets the tone for the whole house, and it takes less than people think: one good focal fitting and a little warmth at eye level.
The two things to get right are scale and clearance. A hall or stairwell can take a far bigger statement than most rooms, especially with a double-height ceiling, so be brave with size. But anywhere people walk, you need 2.1 metres of clearance beneath a pendant, which is where hallway lanterns and hall ceiling lights earn their keep.
