Art Deco Lighting

René Lalique is arguably the most famous glass maker whose lighting is found in many a Brocante market today and he moved on from the organic forms of the Art Nouveau era towards more geometric forms often featuring sunsets and fountains.  Bronze fittings and pastel colours were replaced by chrome and white glass and modern techniques meant that large, more structural designs became very fashionable.

The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 was publicised around the world and grabbed the attention of both the public and designers, leading to many Egyptian inspired motifs in all walks of design, including ceiling lighting.

Designed by the architect William Van Arlen, the Chrysler Building in New York is an icon of Art Deco design.  Financed by Walter Chrysler, the famous car manufacturer, the building includes details to reference the cars, including gargoyles, designed with the Chrysler hood ornament in mind.

The famous crowns at the top of the building feature a sunburst pattern and the arches on the spire are inspired by chrome hubcaps.
