Art Deco refers to the period from 1919 to 1939, originally know as ‘Le style moderne’ and originating in Paris. It is often confused with Art Nouveau, but the influences for these two movements couldn’t really be more different. Art Deco followed on from the Art Nouveau movement, replacing its natural forms and swirls with influences from machinery and manufacturing, giving Art Deco pieces much simpler straight lines and a rather more utilitarian feel.
