Explore Types of Lighting
A clear vision of what function your lighting needs to fulfil helps make informed decisions, whether it’s stunning feature lighting, functional task lighting, beautiful ambient lighting or dramatic accents.
What are the four types of lighting?
Feature lighting is, as you would probably expect, lighting that makes a feature within a room. A classic example is a magnificent chandelier in an entrance hall or reception room, but one of our most popular contemporary feature lights are our beautiful stairwell clusters, where multiple pendants are hung at varying heights to illuminate a staircase in magnificent style.
Ambient lighting is the foundation of most lighting schemes. It aims to evenly distribute light around a room, creating an inviting atmosphere. This type of lighting is typically achieved through layers of light using ceiling fixtures, wall sconces, table lamps and lanterns. These are particularly effective at eliminating any harsh shadows in the corners of the room, ensuring the entire space is illuminated.
A typical lux level for ambient lighting in a domestic setting is around 300-500 lux and this should be achieved using multiple layers of light at the correct colour temperature of approximately 2200 to 2700 kelvins.
In a commercial space the lighting level is typically a bit brighter, with dimmable controls for versatility, but this varies according to the use of the space. The colour temperature would typically be around 2700 to 3000 kelvins.
NB, This is a very broad general advice, depending on the size and use of the space these suggestions would vary.
Accent lighting is the way to create focal points within your space. Its purpose is to highlight any artwork, furnishings or architectural features, drawing attention to specific areas. This often involves wall mounted fixtures, which can be positioned directly above the desired objects. By strategically placing these light sources, you can add contrast, shadows and dimension to a room.
Task lighting is designed to provide direct illumination. It ensures optimal visibility when completing a task, such as preparing a meal or reading a book. This type of lighting often includes directional spot lights, table lamps or wall sconces, providing lighting where you need it most. With perfectly positioned lighting, you should be able to work comfortably, safely and efficiently, without any need to strain your eyes.
