Out with the beige… In 2025 we’re mixing and matching brilliantly bold patterns, textures and colours. It’s the year of layering all of these to create your own personalised and expressive spaces by incorporating everything that you love in one space. Here’s how:

Haven’t you heard of colour drenching? This trend has already taken off and it’s everywhere! But, the trending colour that’s going to take over this year is… yellow. Why yellow? Yellow is a colour that brings warmth, and joy. An easy way to enhance this colour in your home would be to use warm-toned bulbs, antique brass or polished brass to intensify the earthy, golden tones. Additionally, bronze and nickel would pop against the yellow!

However, if maximalism isn’t for you, there’s simple ways to create the statement hallway of your dreams – wallpapered ceilings have become extremely popular alongside colour drenching. Wallpapering the ceiling in transitional spaces can add extra impact while keeping the walls neutral. Followed by large statement lighting, will make the impact you never knew you needed. For a hallway, I’d go with a lantern or chandelier as the main lighting feature to make a bold statement. If there’s enough space, I’d add wall lights, placing them near or on the ceiling, towards artwork to make it stand out and feel more like a feature piece in the space.
A mix of wall lights, a chandelier, lantern, or pendant with some accent lighting (spotlights) will keep the space well balanced while adding depth and character.
If the hallway is narrow, I would make the hallway feel more open, I’d incorporate mirrors to reflect light and create a sense of depth. Accent lighting is essential for highlighting key areas, and if space permits, I’d add table lamps to illuminate functional spots, like where you put on shoes or search for keys, ensuring both style and practicality.
Unfitted kitchens are personal and use layered design such as vintage sideboards, mismatched chairs, and freestanding furniture. They’re perfect because you can switch them up whenever you want and never get bored! What is an unfitted kitchen, and why is it trending? Opting for this approach adds more character and it’s fully customisable to suit you!

Unfitted kitchens are a more sustainable approach to renovating or designing your kitchen, by incorporating portable second-hand pieces.
Interior designer, Tash South, highlights the importance of adaptability of your unfitted kitchen furniture.
“Unfitted kitchens can be interpreted in many ways, the entire kitchen can have an unfitted look, or you can add free-standing elements to a fitted kitchen for a more relaxed look.
I love the idea of elevating this look by using vintage or antique freestanding pieces, or freestanding cabinets or larders in contrasting or complimentary colours or materials – a great way to add personality to a plain kitchen.
Adaptability is also a huge plus – in my kitchen at home I’ve put my brass island on wheels, which I can move around as needs change, or if we need a bigger dance floor at a party!”

Before choosing the lighting, I’d first map out where the kitchen furniture will go and think about how the space will be used. It’s also important to understand the user’s kitchen habits, so I’d ask questions about their daily routines.
This helps tailor the lighting to highlight key areas while ensuring all workspaces are well-lit.
For the kitchen island, I’d recommend a pendant light as a stylish accent feature to elevate the space. It’s common to have three or more pendants above an island to create a balanced look.
In addition, wall lights, recessed downlights, or recessed spotlights, directed toward the kitchen cabinets and countertops provide both general and task lighting. These help illuminate essential areas, making it easier to see inside cabinets and work efficiently.
For the dining area, a feature light or chandelier adds a wow factor while keeping the space bright enough for everyday use.
If recessed lighting isn’t an option, LED strips inside cupboards can highlight utilities like plates and mugs. If you have high ceilings, lowering the ceiling in the dining area and adding a drop ceiling with cove lighting can create a cozy, intimate atmosphere while visually separating the dining space from the kitchen.
If the flooring isn’t a reflective material and won’t mirror light from the LED strip running underneath the kitchen island, it can still help illuminate the space by adding a subtle, ambient glow.
This creates a stylish and atmospheric touch. Hidden lighting beneath work areas, like at the base of the cabinets, is also a great way to enhance the lighting. The light can reflect off the floor and softly brighten the rest of the space, adding both functionality and a very subtle modern design element.

For a hybrid room, a rise-and-fall pendant light is a unique and versatile choice. It provides general illumination for the entire space, and when needed, it can be lowered closer to your desk for focused task lighting.
This type of lighting creates an intimate and interactive experience, making it a great alternative to a traditional table lamp.
A table lamp is another excellent addition, offering directed light to illuminate your workspace and reduce eye strain while reading or working.
It also allows for more flexibility, if you prefer a softer ambiance, you can turn off the ceiling light and rely on wall lights (if available) and the table lamp for a cosy atmosphere.

Lastly, make the most of natural daylight, as it promotes well-being and is the healthiest light source. However, when night falls, additional lighting becomes essential.
Accent and task lighting, such as wall lights and spotlights, are great options for layering light and enhancing the space’s functionality.
For a tall, spacious bathroom, a pendant light above the bath can create a focal point, as long as it is positioned within zones 2 or 3 for safety.
If you want to make a statement, a pendant placed outside zone 3 adds an elegant decorative touch in the middle of the bathroom.
For mirror lighting, consider two pendant lights or two wall lights just above eye level on either side of the mirror. If space is limited, an illuminated mirror with built-in LED strips is a great space-saving solution.
To ensure proper lighting for tasks like makeup application or shaving, add these directional lighting next to or within the mirror.
If the bathroom has a low ceiling, a recessed LED strip in the ceiling provides general illumination without taking up valuable space.
Since recessed lights usually have a high IP rating, installing them on a dimmer switch allows you to control the light levels and adjust the ambiance as needed.
For additional accent lighting, consider LED strips along shelves where you store makeup or toiletries.

Last but not least, hybrid rooms. This might sound like an obvious one, but functionality is key in 2025. There’s more remote workers, so having an area to do your work is non-negotiable these days. But, we don’t all have access to this, right? That’s where hybrid rooms come in! You might be thinking, but I have a small room, my space isn’t big enough to work. You can create the perfect hybrid room in a small space by utilising your living room or dining area!
