Contemporary Lighting

From beautiful glass shades to unique copper fittings, discover our incredible collection of contemporary lights. Suitable for every room, our timeless designs are at the forefront of contemporary lighting fashion. Each light is available in a range of sizes, glass types, metal finishes and flex cable colours. Find the fitting that is just right for you.

Contemporary lighting is about confidence in simplicity: clean forms, honest materials and nothing fussy. Done well it makes a room feel current and calm. Done cheaply it feels disposable, which is exactly why we make ours properly.

Every piece in this collection is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982. The designs are contemporary, the craftsmanship is traditional: hand-spun brass, hand-blown glass and finishes chosen to age well. Because each light is made to order, we can adjust finishes, drops and sizes to your room, and produce matching runs for whole homes or commercial schemes.

Explore contemporary pendant lights, contemporary chandeliers, contemporary wall sconces and contemporary table lamps, including our coloured glass Lucton table lamps. If you are torn between contemporary and modern, or wondering whether a clean design will fight your period features, ask us. We will give you an honest view, including when contrast works better than matching.

What is the difference between contemporary and modern lighting?

In practice the terms overlap. Modern lighting usually means the clean-lined design language of recent decades, while contemporary means whatever feels current now, including softer shapes and coloured glass. Our contemporary range covers both, all made to order in our Herefordshire workshop.

Will contemporary lighting suit my period home?

Yes, if the quality is right. A well-made contemporary fitting in brass or hand-blown glass reads as deliberate contrast in a period room, which designers use to great effect. A cheap contemporary fitting just looks out of place. If you are unsure, send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

Can contemporary light fittings be made in different colours or finishes?

Yes. Because each piece is made to order, we can produce most designs in a range of finishes, and our coloured glass options, like the Lucton table lamps, can be matched to your scheme. If you have a specific finish in mind, ask before you order and we will confirm what is possible.

Are contemporary lights suitable for commercial spaces?

Yes. Our contemporary fittings are used in offices, restaurants, hotels and retail spaces. They are built from solid materials for daily use, and we produce matching runs for whole schemes. Contact us with your project for pricing and lead times.

Do contemporary fittings work with LED bulbs and dimmers?

Yes. All our contemporary lights take LED bulbs, and they dim normally with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer. Warm 2700K LEDs keep contemporary designs feeling inviting rather than clinical.

How do I choose between a contemporary chandelier and pendants?

It comes down to the room’s job and scale. A chandelier or cluster anchors a double-height space, stairwell or dining room as a single statement. Pendants suit rows over islands and tables, and lower ceilings. If the room is modest, we will tell you honestly that pendants will serve you better.

How long does a made-to-order contemporary light take?

Most pieces take a few weeks, made by hand to your order. If you have a deadline, tell us at the point of order and we will confirm a realistic date. For commercial schemes we agree the schedule with you up front.

What makes Fritz Fryer contemporary lighting worth the price?

The making. Each fitting is handmade in our own workshop from solid, honest materials, so it looks right up close, lasts for decades, and can be serviced or adapted by the same people who made it. You are buying longevity and craft, not a trend that dates.
