HOW TO: Light your kitchen island

Home Lighting Tips

Finding just the right lighting for your home can feel a bit daunting, especially in the kitchen.

Three pendant lights hung over a kitchen island is a popular trend that we do not see falling out of fashion any time soon. But where do you start? How do you achieve that Instagram look in your own home?

One of our most frequently asked questions is “How do I space pendant lights over my island”, so here is our simple six step plan to create the perfect feature lighting that your kitchen is crying out for.

Follow these six simple steps to achieve your dream island with 3 decorative glass pendants above:

  1.  Measure the length of the island and divide that figure by six.
  2. The resulting number is the distance from each end  of the island for the outer two pendants.
  3. The middle pendant should be central to the island.
  4. Consider whether bringing the outer two pendants in by a few centimeters will help balance the pendants a little more.
  5. As a rule of thumb, the bottom of the pendant should measure between 1.75m and 1.8m from the floor. Careful if your island is on wheels etc., you may need to install the pendant lights higher or have hooks to pop them up out of the way.
  6. Finally, if your island contains and hob or sink offset the pendants to hang over the worktop section.

Of course, each setting is unique, but in most cases, the above steps are the simple formula that our lighting designers use regularly, to achieve that classic three pendants over the kitchen island.

If you do have that “unique” kitchen island that doesn’t fit our standard equation do not worry! With two full time designers in-house we can work out a design that you will love. We can sketch out to-scale drawings and work out the “tricky” bits and get them straight back to you for you to look over.
