MODERN OFFICE LIGHTING

Getting the lighting in your office wrong at your peril.  Modern office lighting should be inspiration, not harsh or uncompromising.  Combing the latest technology with traditional techniques can provide the perfect lighting scheme for your office building, helping the productivity and well being of all who work there.

THE BRIEF

This exciting project showcased the ingenious design skills of the Fritz Fryer team and the Artisan talents of Katerina Christou Handmade glass, who were enlisted to help create a stunning feature for a modern office design by Interaction ltd.

Interaction ltd, a leading workplace design and build practice, approached Fritz Fryer regarding an exciting office fit-out they were undertaking in Bristol. The project involved incorporating many contemporary-designed lights and, importantly, a breathtaking illuminated feature in the reception area, which was created using carefully formed artisan pieces of glass. The vision for the feature was to resemble or evoke a wave, utalising interesting design techniques to achieve this effect.

THE PROJECT

Interaction presented Fritz Fryer with ideas on what they might like to achieve with their bespoke feature piece, resulting in a design that would be illuminated from above by recessed spotlights instead of individually lit pendants.

In order to create something completely unique, the Fritz Fryer designers approached Katerina Christou, an artisan glass maker. After sharing detailed plans and ideas for the project, along with 3D visualisations that were mocked up through meetings between Interaction and Fritz Fryer, Katerina developed a plan for approaching the task. 58 pieces of artisan glass were hand-fabricated in a slumped, circular shape, in three different sizes. Each piece was then hung from high tensile wire at varying heights to create the look of a wave. The exact placement of central holes, from which the wire would connect to the glass, was critical to ensuring they did not hang unevenly.

Elsewhere throughout the office lighting scheme, Interaction ltd also chose to include fittings from the Fritz Fryer contemporary range, such as white and clear Wellington pendant lights and five clear glass Hereford pendant lights over the kitchen island. The Herefords were installed on a track lighting system, allowing them to be easily moved to provide light where needed.

This project was a successful collaboration between Fritz Fryer, Interaction ltd, and Katerina Christou, and is a testament to the skill and ingenuity of all involved. By working together and sharing inspiration and ideas, this office space was completely transformed.
