Then excitement was palpable when we got the job to supply all of the lighting for a beautiful castle in the Orkneys. This magnificent castle is actually a calendar house, meaning it's architectural components, such as external doors, windows, and rooms mirror the elements of the calendar (e.g. 365 windows, 4 wings and 12 chimneys).
Finding enough antique lighting to light 72 rooms kept us busy for a while! When the new owners took over the castle was in a poor state of decoration and the lighting was somewhat lacking in style and practicality - however we soon managed to put this right. Mind you, we did hold our breath when transporting all the lighting via vans and ferries to get there.
The entire castle was restored and antique lighting installed in every one of the beautiful rooms. It took quite some sourcing from auctions and antique fairs around the uk. Fritz Fryer restored and installed some magnificent crystal chandeliers as well as dozens of gas brackets and wall lights and some traditional, more functional, lighting in the less formal rooms.
It's hard to get a scale of the fittings from a photo - the antique Murano glass chandelier we hung in the stairwell was well over 6ft tall and the crystal wall brackets were stunning.
Rather complicated to get to, it was nonetheless a wonderful project to work on, taking over 18 months to complete and the finished results are spectacular. A very grand and perfect 'get away from it all' retreat.
