The business was opened in 1982 by Four Pennies band member Fritz Fryer and his partner Joan Graham. Fritz grew the business and gained a formidable reputation for high quality antique lighting. Fritz and Joan retired in 2004, when the business was bought by Karen and Simon. It has continued to go from strength to strength and our collection is now housed in a beautiful converted industrial unit, in Ross-On-Wye.
We, Simon and Karen, came across Fritz Fryer when we bought some lights from Margaret who still works for us, back in 1999. We had just moved to Herefordshire and were renovating a cottage when we found Fritz Fryer in Ross-On-Wye and instantly fell in love with the shop. When we heard Fritz and Joan were selling the business we leapt at the chance to take over the reigns and, in June 2004, we became the proud new owners and have never looked back.
Antique lighting is at the heart of our business.
After all, it’s where we began back in the 1980s when Fritz Fryer, former member of the Four Pennies band, began restoring and selling antique lighting from a workshop in Ross-on-Wye.
Today our antique lighting is sourced from all over the UK and Europe. Carefully selected at auctions, antique fairs and the odd lucky find - particularly when the owners, Karen and Simon are routing through the brocante markets in the south of France. We pride ourselves on the quality of our Antique Lighting Collection.
Hand restored on-site in our Herefordshire workshops by skilled craftsmen, our focus is always on the quality of the original materials.
Our expertise in this area means we instantly know when a well-made light fitting that has deteriorated over the years can be repaired. This is what creates the true essence of the Antique Lighting Collection at Fritz Fryer and why customers know us as ‘The Lighting Specialists’.
Since Karen and Simon bought Fritz Fryer in 2004, the company has grown and grown. This presented our little business with some amazing opportunities, and a need for a lot more staff to cope with growing demand for our products. More staff and more lighting orders required a lot more space.
In 2019, work began on our brand new, state of the art studio! Converting a large warehouse would create space for us to restore more lighting, expand our team and showcase all of our contemporary and antique lighting designs.
We design, make, sell and restore high quality and unique lighting, both contemporary and antique.
We pride ourselves on the quality of our design, build and restoration, which is second to none.
Our reputation is of the utmost importance to us. We strive to maintain and promote integrity within our industry and are proud to be members of the Lighting Industry Association.
We are proud to offer a personal and thorough service to all our customers. We take the time to consider every aspect of your purchase, and encourage you to phone us to discuss your particular lighting issues. We will offer advice based on what will work for you in your particular setting. Amongst our team we have a huge amount of lighting experience and someone here will know the answer to your question or, if not, find out for you.
At Fritz Fryer Lighting we were well ahead of our time in discovering the value of upcycling and recycling, because we began by restoring antique lights. We continue with this ethos and strive to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible.
The beauty of our original antique light fittings is that they were made to last, from high quality materials and with a high standard of craftsmanship. In addition, recent developments in low energy light bulbs mean we can now claim a low carbon footprint throughout the life of our product.
We seek to use British suppliers wherever possible so our products are not flown in from around the world and our fittings are made to last from quality materials.
In addition, we only purchase recyclable packaging wherever possible. Our void fill chips are fully biodegradable. If your order arrives with some non-biodegradable packaging it will be because we recycle all packaging materials which arrive from our suppliers wherever possible and, sadly, they don't all use biodegradable products (especially chips). We feel it is better to reuse them multiple times rather than send them to landfill. If you wish to return your packaging to us, we will happily receive and reuse it for you.
