What Makes The Aston Lantern So Special?

Bespoke Lighting Design

As a business Fritz Fryer Lighting found its roots in sourcing, restoring and selling antique lighting. This is still partly true to how we run the business some 30 years on with exception of our contemporary range of hand blown glass fittings. In an ever-changing market of Interiors, Karen and Simon took what they had learnt from antique lighting and with the help of Margaret and the workshop, they designed the range that we now call the Fritz Fryer Collection.
An important lesson that we have taken from antique lighting is that if the light is of a superb quality, it will physically stand the test of time. It will hold its value and it will be contemporary in many settings in the decades to come. As Christian Dior once said, “Real luxury requires real materials and a genuine craftsmanship”. In the heyday of British manufacturing, at the turn of the 20th Century, the Midlands was the centre of fine craftsmanship. Big names in lighting such as F&C Osler and Faraday & Son all produced lighting here in the Midlands.

As we are based in the small market town of Ross-on-Wye in the West Midlands it is fitting that we are working with UK craftsmen from all over the country; championing hand crafts and traditional techniques with modern outcomes. It was this inspiration and a chance meeting with a watch maker that sparked Simons imagination and as a result, the Aston Lantern was born.

The Aston Lantern is made entirely in the UK in partnership with British companies. We are using the same UK glass blower to produce the glass for the Aston Lantern and Table Lamp as we do throughout the contemporary Fritz Fryer range making the new addition a great complimentary fitting. This also means that we use the same options of clear, ribbed, white, smoked and skinny ribbed glass, so if you would like to match fittings that you have previously purchased, the Aston can be created to fit your scheme.

Following in the steps of Osler and Faraday, we have created a maker’s mark which is situated inside the Aston Lantern. This symbol of our company is a great step forward for us at Fritz Fryer, and shows the quality that we are passionate about maintaining within our collection.

The joy of the Aston Lantern is that it is fully customisable, with over 100 combinations to choose from there will be a lantern for any setting. The metal framework has a choice of finish, the two glass sections are individually customisable between our gorgeous hand blown glass pieces, and we have a huge range of flex. This flexibility is what makes the Aston Lantern spectacular. For an Art Deco look, the nickel frame and white glass gives a 1930s look whereas the combination of polished brass and smoked glass has a speakeasy, gentleman’s club aesthetic.
